QR Silver Spike

Don't miss all the race action at the QR Silver Spike marquee!
4 QR teams will compete against each other and the clock to beat the record for manual track laying.
It takes safety, strength and skill to win the QR Silver Spike competition.
The Silver Spike is currently one of QR’s major community events, showcasing QR’s commitment to safety, teamwork and quality.
The Central Qld Regional Finals will be played out at AgroTrend. Thousands of people will come to experience the fierce display of skill, speed, stamina and strength!
The winning team will go through to compete at the highly coveted state final, a major event held at the ‘Ekka’ in Brisbane.
Competition details
- Teams race against the clock and each other to lay 13 metres of track in the safest and fastest time.
- Teams lift 3000kg of equipment by hand per race, laying sleepers, the track, and nailing in 160 dog spikes before racing a pump car along the track to the stop block.
- Judges assess the workmanship of each team and time penalties are imposed for any safety breaches. The aim is to not only to have the fastest but also the cleanest run.
- Although strength and speed are important, to be successful in the spike, teams also have to show a high degree of skill, safety awareness, innovation, and work very well together as a team. The better the teams work together, the more effectively they will lay the track.
- The art of manual tracklaying may be from a bygone era but the inherent qualities of the Silver Spike are very much part of the modern QR.
