Making A Living Out of BBQ

12 months ago Paul Durston had recently become unemployed and had no idea what he was going to do next.  To help fill in his time he, with the support of his wife Bronnie, decided to focus on their passion of barbequing and started to organise Bundaberg’s first BBQ Battle as part of the Australasian BBQ Alliance competition.

Fast forward to the present and the couple are loving life and bringing the world of BBQ to Bundaberg through not only the BBQ Battle but regular catering at Riverfeast and other private functions.  That is when they are not competing in other BBQ competitions throughout Australia as Bulldogs BBQ Australia.

“12 Months ago we didn't know if we were coming or going, since then we have organised the first Bundaberg BBQ Battle, set up 4670 BBQ, now our time is busy thinking, talking, sleeping, cooking and eating BBQ” said Paul and Bronnie.

The inaugural Bundaberg BBQ Battle was held as part of Agrotrend last year with 12 teams participating.  This year 30 teams have registered from WA, SA, NSW and Qld.

“This year has grown beyond our expectations.  The BBQ community are a fun supportive group but when it comes to competition we all take it very seriously” said Paul.

It was the art of controlling fire and smoke to get the perfect results on low n slow BBQ that got them hooked.  Childhood memories of cooking by a campfire has now become a way of life for the couple.  Promoting the Bundaberg region is also a passion for Paul and Bronnie and they promote the region’s produce whenever the opportunity arises.

“Bundaberg is a perfect place, to live and grow with 90% of all the products we use in 4670 BBQ or when we are away competing coming from within our region” said Paul.

Paul will be doing a special presentation “Fun Fire Food” on Friday 5th in the Main Pavillion.  The Bundaberg BBQ Battle will be held on Saturday 6th May as part of Agrotrend and the public are welcome to come along, have a look and chat with the teams.  Rotary will have pulled pork and beef burgers available just in case the aromas get the better of you.

Agrotrend will be held on the 5th and 6th May 2017.
