Alpacas produce luxurious fleece but did you know how much fun there is in breeding them? These eco-friendly animals are suited to small lifestyle blocks as well as large broad-acre farms. Their soft padded foot, communal dung piles, low water intake and gentle grazing nature make them very low impact on the land.
The region offers friendly, personalised service to prospective alpaca owners whether you are looking for pets, lawn mowers, herd guards or breeding stock. Alpaca owners love to talk about their animals and have a wealth of information to share. Including offering the opportunity to inspect hundreds of alpaca’s on-farm, giving you an insight into their feeding and fencing requirements. Some of our members provide ongoing management support and agistment.
New for 2018 we have a Youth Judges competition. This competition is to encourage and develop interest and involvement in alpacas by young people between 15 and 25 years of age. They Judge 4 fleeces and give an overall oral presentation, then awarding the fleece a placing between 1st and 4th to an AAA accredited Judge.
We have the Handlers Workshop, for young people from 7 years to 26 years of age. Come and learn about basic alpaca handling, followed by a Judging event for their new found skills. We have a Judge coming from Victoria to talk about alpacas. We even supply some cute and cuddly animals for the competition.
Youth can take part in 1 or 2 sections
· Showmanship section: Show Ringcraft and Proficiencies- Demonstrates the handler’s proficiency in preparation, presentation, handling and understanding of their alpaca.
· Stockmanship section: Demonstration of the handler’s skills and sound working relationship with their alpaca, taking them over a series of challenges on a set course.
This is a good opportunity for our youth to talk to and see what Youth Paraders can achieve while supporting our local show and Agrotrend. Registrations can be taken on the day and start from 9 am.
Come along and see us at the Australian Alpaca Association 2018 Show as part of Agrotrend. With over 100 entries over the two days it is one not to miss.
